Lecture of Katharina Neges: Intellectual Independence - The Case of Artistic Research

What could intellectual independence look like? Which conditions are enabling independent thought and which are rather obstructive? Why should we aim for an environment which favors intellectual independence?

To answer these questions I shall start by introducing a distinction between two conceptions of independence. The first can be called Autarky-Conception, the second Autonomy-Conception. The first is an attempt to define independence through the quality of being self-sufficient. The second focuses on the capacity of self-determination and the freedom of choice. I shall argue that reasons drawn from philosophy speak in favor of a modest Autonomy-Account of independence.

To spot a few obstacles and easements for independence I exemplify how this conceptual analysis relates to a new academic research area: Artistic Research. The recent debate about the foundations of Artistic Research is a promising candidate for favoring intellectual independence instead of obedience. I shall outline the epistemic and ethical potential of this discourse.
