Artistic Research Generates Knowledge

The University of Music and Performing Arts Graz (KUG) stands for innovative research that builds on the productive synergy between art and science. In 2009, KUG Graz was the first Music University in German speaking countries to offer a doctoral programme for artists. Since it has built an international reputation for its artistic doctoral programme.

Our Vision

Artistic activity combined with scholarly research generates original knowledge for the arts to the benefit of art, academia and society.

To be accepted into our programme you need to prove an already substantial career in the arts, and an explicit wish to develop your artistic practice through scholarly reflection.

What Do We Offer?

We offer personal supervision by advisors in both the artistic subject of the candidate as well as the specific academic area. Furthermore, we provide a high quality programme of subject-specific and interdisciplinary research training and skill development in an internationally renowned art and research environment.

The courses enhance and develop the abilities of the doctoral candidates, and deepen the intellectual, and cultural impact of their activities in art and research alike.

Whom Do We Address?

We are looking for exceptional artists in music and transdisciplinary art who show promising research potential. Artists may gain the degree of „Dr. artium“ by pursuing their own research project and following a profound doctoral programme at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz (KUG).
